FUNCTION: This is an exempt position responsible for working on behalf of the American Lung Association of the Southeast, Inc.(ALASE) and Mothers & Others for Clean Air (M&O) to reduce air pollution and improve air quality in a four-state area that includes Florida, Georgia, North Carolina & South Carolina. The Project Director for Mothers & Others for Clean Air (M&O) is responsible for administration, advocacy, communications and fundraising for M&O. The Project Director manages the Mothers & Others for Clean Air program, Leadership Board, Partnership Council, and grassroots network.


 Administration: Develop a plan to fund and implement M&O goals to reduce air pollution, improve air quality, promote conservation, advocate for environmental controls, and educate the private and public sector about air pollution health concerns. Maintain project’s web and social media presence. Develop and administer project budget, and income/expense reports. Develop and submit timely reports as required by the association or funding sources. Recruit, train and supervise other staff. Tasks include:

o Manage program contractors, recruit and hire additional staff support and provide on-going staff development opportunities.

o Oversee recruitment of new partner groups and individuals from medical/public health, academia, education, and child advocacy groups.

o Develop budgets, oversee program spending and maintain all financial information in an up-to-date and organized fashion.

 Advocacy: Develop relationships with elected and appointed officials responsible for air pollution controls and regulations, recruit and train air quality volunteers/experts, and serve as a primary resource on air quality issues. Provide guidance and direction for action on air quality issues. Monitor air quality policy and regulatory action for health impact. Tasks include:

o Provide senior level expertise on air-quality related issues.

o Develop and provide strategic leadership for M&O/ALA federal activities and identify and participate in state and local initiatives.

o Foster, build and maintain health-focused supporters that have impact on elected officials. o Develop and/or supervise advocacy campaigns that include grassroots and key supporter mobilization, lobbying, and policy expertise.

o Represent M&O before policy makers and those who promulgate rules and regulations in Georgia.  Community Involvement: Represent M&O and ALASE as a member of appropriate professional organizations and coalitions.

 Development: Seek funding to maintain and increase project capacity. Tasks include:

o Update and implement a fundraising plan.

o Develop grant proposals.

o Coordinate special events to raise revenue.

o Conduct donor research and prospect identification.

o Approach, cultivate and solicit individual, corporate and foundations for monetary and in-kind gifts.

 Media: Develop relationships with major media outlets, recruit and train spokespersons, and serve as the primary resource for information on air pollution and related issues. Provide timely information on air quality for media outlets (traditional & social), internal publications, community, and supporters. Serve as a spokesperson for M&O. Tasks include:

o Ensure consistent, appropriate delivery of M&O/ALA messaging. o Manage media relations activities, including serving as media contact and spokesperson, write press releases, media alerts/statements, and opinion editorials, and track and report on news coverage.

o Coordinate website maintenance by ensuring that new and appropriate information is posted weekly. Supervise staff/program consultants on their social media outreach including action alerts, Facebook and Twitter content.

o Recruit storytellers who are individuals affected by air pollution and medical/health professionals who provide care for patients with respiratory illnesses.

o Draft monthly e-newsletter and distributes to database.

 Professional Development: Select and participate in local, state and national seminars and courses designed to increase skills and knowledge related to job requirements.

 Volunteer Development: Recruit and train volunteers, including members of the health/medical community on matters related to maintaining and improving air quality. Manage the M&O Leadership Board, Partnership Council, and grassroots network. Tasks include:

o Schedule meetings, arrange location and provide timely notification to participants. Prepare agenda in conjunction with chair.

o Execute the decisions of M&O Board. In cooperation with the board secretary, prepare minutes to make available for the next board meeting.

o Help identify and recruit new board candidates and Council members.

 Other: Perform other ALASE responsibilities as assigned. All activities, positions and statements must fall within the policies and mission of the American Lung Association.

REQUIREMENTS: Must be self-motivated and work independently with strong oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to manage multiple assignments. Possess ability to handle stressful situations including achieving goals set by the association, unplanned calls for action related to advocacy, and other situations requiring a quick solution. Possess computer skills including Microsoft Office, data and constituent management systems, proficiency with databases, media platforms and must be willing to learn other software programs. Provide personal transportation to attend meetings and functions with a valid driver license and proof of personal auto insurance. Must be willing to travel. Must be a non-smoker.

QUALIFICATIONS: Four-year college degree or equivalent in communication, health, environment or related fields. A minimum four years demonstrated successful experience in environmental, public health or science related work that includes advocacy, communications and development:

 4-5 years experience in planning and implementing advocacy or public health campaigns.

 Demonstrated effectiveness as a fundraiser which includes experience with special event and grants management. Familiarity with philanthropic/funding community is a plus.

 Public speaking and media experience.

 Experience working with boards and volunteers at all levels of engagement.

 Experience in budget management/financial tracking.

 Experience working with diverse populations.

 Experience supervising staff/consultants.

 Knowledge of air issues pertaining to environmental or transportation policy and regulations.

 Experience in non-profit advocacy work.
